DNS Settings for Office 365 in Power DNS

I was thinking about changing my name servers to point to my own DNS Server as the primary server and a “Friend of a Friends” name server as the secondary.

My VPS is running PowerDNS which is simple enough to add in regular DNS entries, my biggest head ache was the SRV record as I needed to add:

SRV: _sipfederationtls
Protocol: _tcp
Port: 5061
Weight: 1
Priority: 100
TTL: 100
Target: sipfed.online.lync.com

In Windows DNS it was pretty straight forward but in PowerDNS it proved a bit for tricky. I tried several different ways of adding it but it would not let me un till I put the following:

Name of the record: _sipfederationtls._tcp
Type: IN SRV
Content: 1 5061 sipfed.online.lync.com
Priority: 100
TTL: 60

I hit add and it added the record and seemed to like it. now all I have to do is point my name servers from their current name servers to the two new ones…

…see you on the other side.

My DNS server updates the secondary automatically so all settings should be propagated to the secondary in the event that my server falls over

    Hi Andrew,
I know I’m about 4 months late, but did you manage to get this to work? I’m actually working on the same thing, but getting confused with the correct syntax regarding the SRV record.

I’m guessing the 1 stands for the weight? And what does the IN stand for as in type: IN SRV?
