Windows Storage Server 2008 Basic

I was looking through my TechNet Subscription today and noticed that Windows Storage Server 2008 was available for download. I have been using Windows Storage Server 2003 on and off now as it is only a 30 day eval so be running it and then re-installing it and running it again for testing clustering and the like.

So I thought if it is on TechNet then it must be like all the TechNet Software, the full version for testing. So like a true Techie I downloaded it and burnt to DVD and installed.

The installation is identical to Server 2008 apart from one thing….

…It didn’t prompt me to create a password. Once install it booted to the logon screen and prompted me for a password for the Admin Account… OK what was it! I had a look on the TechNet site and could not see it documented any where.

Well my first hit on a Google search of:

“what is the windows storage server 2008 admin password”

took me to:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=133733

Well it turns out that the password is… Wait for it…

wSS2008! but of course why didn’t I think of that one! I tried administrator
Administrator
Pa55w0rd
all various combinations of are usually default Administrator passwords!

Well I have no installed it and running a Windows Update so watch this space, hope to have some more updates soon enough!

Very odd 'feature' MS has added by setting a password for administrator. Perhaps to give it a real 'appliance' feel.
