Windows Server 2008 Core

imageI decided to install just the core or windows server 2008 Ent, the install was pretty quick even considering that it was on a virtual. Once it was installed I really wasn’t too sure on what to expect, I think that I was expecting a Unix/Linux like boot screen where you see a load of devices, drivers and services starting, however I had to admit I was some what disappointed as all you got was the server 2008 splash screen.

Once booted up it then prompted me to press ctrl+alt+del, huh! what’s all this about I thought that there was meant to be no GUI with it? well I pressed it and it prompted me for a password. So like Storage Server 2008 I had to do a Google for the default core password (which is blank, but of course it is!) and then set a new password.

Once I had done that I logged on…

it then said Applying settings etc… and then get this… Preparing your Desktop and that took a wee while to “Prepare” and what was it??? a Command Prompt on a blank desktop!

So now I have a Command Line Interface (CLI) to play around with, next step is to actually learn something useful to do with it!

Windows Storage Server 2008 Basic

I was looking through my TechNet Subscription today and noticed that Windows Storage Server 2008 was available for download. I have been using Windows Storage Server 2003 on and off now as it is only a 30 day eval so be running it and then re-installing it and running it again for testing clustering and the like.

So I thought if it is on TechNet then it must be like all the TechNet Software, the full version for testing. So like a true Techie I downloaded it and burnt to DVD and installed.

The installation is identical to Server 2008 apart from one thing….

…It didn’t prompt me to create a password. Once install it booted to the logon screen and prompted me for a password for the Admin Account… OK what was it! I had a look on the TechNet site and could not see it documented any where.

Well my first hit on a Google search of:

“what is the windows storage server 2008 admin password”

took me to:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=133733

Well it turns out that the password is… Wait for it…

wSS2008! but of course why didn’t I think of that one! I tried administrator
Administrator
Pa55w0rd
all various combinations of are usually default Administrator passwords!

Well I have no installed it and running a Windows Update so watch this space, hope to have some more updates soon enough!

Last.fm vs Spotify

I have been using both of these online music streaming sites for some time now and really finding it hard to decide which one I should stick with. They are both really good services. Last.fm is totally free, however you can only create a radio station to listen to and it will stream all types of tracks related to your artist search. Spotify has two services, the Free service that has Ads every now and then and the premium service which is £9.99 a month I believe that contains no ads.

Quality wise, through cheap ish head phones there is no real difference in the quality of either service, however when I played through my home cinema (which is about 9 years old now) and not very high spec I could hear the quality difference, Last.fm seemed to be that bit clearer than Spotify.

Last.fm has the added advantage that you can play it through your web browser not just through the client that you can install on your OS, where as Spotify you need to install an agent on wither Windows or MAC, also Last.fm has a player for the iPod Touch and iPhone.

Over all for my use I think that I will stick with them both.

Spotify and McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.5.0

Last night I decided to download Spotify on to my Windows 7 Laptop, I had it running on my PC in the office no problems and I do like the ability to search a wide selection of “CD’s” online and then playing them. Well during the install on my laptop I kept getting a virus alert from McAfee saying the Spotify contained a virus and that the exe file had been deleted, Handy hey!

To get it up and running I had to add an exception into the ePO server to exclude Spotify.exe from the On Access Scan policy.

Once added and refreshed the policies on my laptop I could then install Spotify.

The strangest this is that My Office Desktop was running the same version of McAfee with the same definitions and it allowed me to install Spotify with no problems. The only difference with my desktop and laptop is that UAC is set to low on my desktop so maybe it is something to do with the Admin rights??

New Skin

I recently thought that it was about time that I “Freshened up” my blog. By pure coincidence Si Philp had been adapting another skin to subtext and asked if I wanted to try it out so like before I thought why not lets give it a try!

So I uploaded it! Since uploading it I have made a few modifications to it Added the Online Community buttons and moving the Recent Comments and Recent Posts from the Footer to the Sidebar. I have also added in my Google Ad’s (Might as well make some money from my Blog, still not enough to retire on :()

Well let me know what you think of the Skin, and any ideas you might have for it.

Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) Windows 7

With Windows Vista I had to install the Admin Pack for Windows Server and then run a cmd file to register a load of DLL’s I tried this fix with Windows 7 but it didn’t work. I then found out that there was a tool created for Windows 7 Beta called Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) for Windows 7 Beta, so I downloaded this and installed

x86: http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/D/4/AD4D3903-E06D-456D-AED4-D53895D2C1A9/Windows6.1-KB958830-x86.msu

x64: http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/D/4/AD4D3903-E06D-456D-AED4-D53895D2C1A9/Windows6.1-KB958830-x64.msu

After the install I went into my Administrative Tools menu but I could not see anything. It turned out what I needed to do was to add these in through the Programs and Features (as this was not an added feature of Windows 7)

So what you need to do is to go into Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features on or off and then select the Remote Server Admin Tools option:

I added all the options in there as I wanted to see what there was but you only need to select the tools you specifically require.

At the moment I am still having no luck installing Exchange System Manager on Windows 7 so if anyone knows how to please get in touch.

Products, Suppliers and Support

Part of my job is to deal with suppliers and other support departments for Products that we purchase, and the thing that really gets to me is constant calls from sales guys!

Some products I would recommend to other companies based on how the product is, other products I would highly recommend to other firms and companies based on the product itself but also on the support I get from the vendor.

Below is a small list who I would highly recommend.

Digital Dictation

We use a product called DictaFlow from a company called nFlow, it has been running for about 18 months now and I have to say it is a very stable product and we have experienced no serious issues with it. The Support department when I have had to deal with them have been on the ball and know their product inside out.

Unified Email Management

OK so I am guessing if you have read this blog before or have been following me for some time, then you will more than likely know that we use Mimecast for this! it integrates with our systems seamlessly and makes life so much easier. The guys at Mimecast are always coming up with new ideas and initiatives for new products and I have to say this year looks like we will see some big changes and it looks pretty exciting.

Again the support at Mimecast it fantastic, the guys there are on the ball and usually have my query answered with in minutes of me calling. This is a product that I do really believe sells itself. And the way it integrates into outlook is brilliant.

Hardware

Some people say “I wouldn’t touch Dell with a barge pole” and that used to be the cast for me 5 years ago. Back then HP were my preferred hardware vendor, until they moved their service centre out to India! Great one HP! as part of our contract with HP we had MS Support with them and our SQL DBA phoned up with a SQL issue and the guy on the other end of the phone asked how to spell SQL!

We then had issues that they did not have parts in stock when we had simple things like Hard Disk failures. We had a 24x7x4hr fix care pack on all servers and it took them 24 hrs to get a 300GB HotSwap disk to us as there were none in Scotland, or England, it ended up being shipped in from Germany.

However about 5 years ago we looked at Dell, the beauty Dell was that  we went direct to Dell, and the hardware was made to order, ok that took a bit longer than next day delivery! but if you need a server usually you know well in advance that you need one!

So we gave Dell the opportunity to replace our old aging HP kit. and to this day I haven’t regretted it. not only has the kit been pretty reliable and well priced, but when we have had things like Hard Disk failures then it is usually with us with in 2 hrs. The only serious problem I have had with Dell is with one of our MD1000’s it kept powering off and on. I had a dedicated Dell Technician working with me on the problem and with in a few days we had the problems solved.

Oh and the call centre is in Glasgow!

Suppliers/Resellers

I have been with my current company for 6 years now and we have seen a number of suppliers come and go, however we do have one company that we use and would usually prefer to give the business to, Softcat.

My account manager at Softcat will more than often give me his best price first, there is no going back (usually) and asking if he can get that price lower! The other great thing is that the guys at Softcat do not call you every day, unlike some! I have even had a sales guy calling me twice maybe 3 times a day.

It wasn’t until recently that I realised that Softcat did hardware too! (Well with a name like Softcate you wouldn’t really think Hardware!), any how they are now an approved Dell reseller, and they have given me just as good pricing as Dell has, and Dell give us very aggressive pricing! Not only do they give us good prices but they also only charge £10 for deliver for each item, where as with Dell it does vary depending on the kit you order.

There are a few other suppliers that I would consider going back to, Ramesys, Dell (for both hardware and software), and InSight.

The supplier for our WAN link between the Edinburgh and Glasgow Offices is called InTechnolog. This company gives us a 10/100 mbps link between our offices and also back down to their data centre in Harrogate where we rent rack space and have several key servers and equipment down there. The service isn’t cheap but it is worth it, the WAN is very realiable, the Data Centre is fully redundant so our servers down there will always be running even if there was a power cut. InTech also offer a host of other services that I am going to be looking in to this year one of which is they Multi-Tiered Data Management (MDM) which is an offsite backup solution. They also offer Vitulisation Services.

The other think I like a bout inTech is their Annual Golf Day, although I do not play golf it is a good fun and a great networking event, oh and a free bar! so I know that our money spent with them is going on worth while things :)

If you have any preferred resellers/vendors you use then please do let me know.

Mimecast Services for Outlook 2.0

I have been running with this version of MSO now for about 4 weeks and I have to say the guys at Mimecast have really done some great work on it.

I had the previous version installed, but I never actually used it with my exchange server offline. The latest version has been working great even when I am not connected to my exchange server, ie I switch my laptop on at home and open up outlook and do not connect through the VPN, after about 20 minutes or so I start receiving all my work email from when I was last connected to the Exchange Server, impressive or what!

This alleviates the need for Outlook Anywhere on the exchange side as it is all done through the Mimecast infrastructure

When working in the “Continuity Mode” all the email you receive will be delivered into your Inbox and then when you are re-connected to your Exchange Server it will sync up again.

There is still an MSO account that sits in your Folder List in Outlook and you can use that to drag emails back into your inbox if you want to and also perform searches across the account, there have been also some changes to the search option.

Also one of the restrictions of the previous versions was that if you changed the number of emails to display in MSO from 20 to say 100 and then closed down outlook and went back in it was set to 20 again, now it saves what you set it too.

I still haven’t had a chance to fully play around with the MSO but so far I am again very impressed with the guys at Mimecast.

I am looking forward to what is coming out later on this year.

Windows 7 RC is here

Last week saw the release of Windows 7 RC to TechNet and MSDN subscribers and today sees the release of Windows 7 to the public: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

After taking for what seemed ages to download last week I eventually got Windows 7 RC installed into my Dell Latitude D630 Laptop. Installtion only took about 20 – 30 minutes and I was up and running on my domain in next to no time.

I had a couple of issues activating my Office Products, but these eventually got activated over the weekend, maybe there was an abundance of activations due to people wanting rid of Vista and putting this on their desktops instead.

I didn’t get a chance to really play around with Windows 7 Beta in terms of getting it to run things like ADUC and ESM, so I am hoping this week I will have a chance to see if I can get these working on Windows 7 much like the fixes there were for Windows Vista, so watch this space. I have to say I would choose the beta or RC of Windows 7 any day over Windows Vista.

At the moment all my Windows 7 build has on it is:

  • Office 2007 Ultimate
  • Visio Pro 2007
  • Project Pro 2007
  • SharePoint Designer 2007
  • TweetDeck
  • Flock
  • iTunes
  • Mimecast services for Outlook 2.0
  • AVG Free Edition
I hope to put a few more apps on to day and see how it runs.
Just out of curiosity, what AV are you guys using for Windows 7 I did try McAfee through ePO but I had a few issues, which is why, for the time being, I am using AVG Free Edition. (Answers on the back of a post card please :))
